The APEC Training Course on LED Photometry, hosted by the National Institute of Quality of Peru (INACAL) and organized by the National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China, concluded successfully in June. Thirty participants from nine APEC economies attended the training.
As LED lighting has gradually replaced incandescent lighting, conventional photometer calibration based on incandescent standards can no longer fully meet the requirements for LED lighting measurement because of spectral mismatch. To address this issue, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) published CIE 251:2023, recommending the use of the CIE L41 reference spectrum for LED photometric measurements.
The training focused on key technology in LED photometry, covering the fundamentals of photometry and colorimetry, the application of CIE L41, uncertainty evaluation for LED measurements, and laboratory experiments. Combining theoretical lectures with hands-on laboratory training, the programme was designed to enhance participants’ technical competence in LED photometry. The theoretical sessions were delivered by Tony Bergen, President-elect of the CIE, while the laboratory training was conducted by experts from NIM.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Fang Fang, Vice Director General of NIM, expressed NIM’s willingness to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with APEC economies in LED metrology, willingness to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with APEC economies to promote innovation in LED metrology and underpin the development of the LED lighting industry.
The training enhanced participants' theoretical knowledge and practical skills in LED photometry, promoted the application of the CIE L41 reference spectrum, and supported metrology institutes across APEC economies in strengthening their technical capabilities. The programme also laid a foundation for future international mutual recognition and further cooperation in LED metrology.
