Emerging Scientist Workshop (ESW) 2024 was held in hybrid format at NIM Changping Campus from 26 to 28 August. The event was attended by over 70 participants from NIM, NMIJ and KRISS, which comprised mostly young metrologists and ESW Scientific Committee members including Dr QU Jifeng from NIM, Dr WOO Sam Yong from KRISS, and Dr KANEKO Nobuhisa and Dr KURAMOTO Naoki from NIMJ.
The event featured oral presentations and poster exchanges, where the young metrologists from each NMI showcased their research achievements and exchanged their views on various topics. A highlight of the event was a Symposium titled Young Metrologists’ 2050+ Vision, which represented an echo of the BIPM initiative with the same title and aimed to inspire the young participants with new research ideas. Dr LIN Hong from NIM, Dr KANEKO Nobuhisa from NMIJ, and Dr JUNG Jin Sang from KRISS delivered keynote speeches on climate change and quantum metrology to inspire the young metrologists to address global challenges and embrace global trends. Additionally, thematic discussions were organized, focusing on four key topics, i.e. sustainability, quantum metrology, digital transformation and AI, and health.

ESW was jointly initiated by NIM, NMIJ, and KRISS in 2015 and has become an annual event hosted alternately by the three institutes. It provides a platform for young metrologists to showcase their talents and exchange ideas. Dr DAI Xinhua, Vice Director of NIM, encouraged the participants to develop a stronger partnership at ESW 2024 in her written welcome remarks. Dr QU Jifeng, Vice Director of NIM and one of the ESW SC members, inspired the younger generation to gain a deeper understanding of international trends and to collectively shape the future of metrology. Dr WOO Sam Yong and Dr KANEKO Nobuhisa both noted the significance of ESW in forging connections and cooperation among young metrologists.
