The World Metrology Day 2019 Activity Held in Beijing and the New Definitions of the SI Base Units Formally Implemented in China

On May 20, the 20th World Metrology Day, nearly 500 Chinese and foreign guests, academicians, experts and scholars in the metrology field gathered in the China Hall of Science and Technology in Beijing to participate in the World Metrology Day 2019 Activity jointly held by the State Administration for Market Regulation, NIM, Chinese Society for Measurement, China Metrology Association, and China Quality and Standards Publishing & Media Co., Ltd.

The World Metrology Day this year is themed with the "International System of Units (SI) – Fundamentally Better". According to the Resolution 1 passed unanimously at the 26th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), the 4 base units of the SI, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, and mole, will be changed to a new definitions based on fundamental constants, which will come into effect from May 20, 2019.

Party member Qin Yizhi, Vice Director (minister-level) of the State Administration for Market Regulation announced at the meeting that the new definition of the SI base units would be formally enforced in China from May 20. The China National Committee for Terms in Sciences and Technologies released the new Chinese definition of the 7 SI base units on site.

Anthony John Donnellan, Director of BIML, and Dr. Patrizia Tavella, Representative and Chief Expert in Time and Frequency of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), were present and gave speeches. Director Donnellan gave special thanks to China for its active role in the international metrology affairs in his speech.

According to Qin Yizhi in his speech, metrology is important support to the construction of an integrated national strategic system and capacity, and the SI is the cornerstone in the global measurement system; the quantization revolution of metrology makes the accurate limit measurement possible, enables the measurement standards to be realized anytime, anywhere, and directly applies the most accurate "steelyard" in people's production and life. The State Administration for Market Regulation will comply with the resolution of the CGPM to continue to implement the national legal metrological units based on the SI, and by taking the opportunity of implementing the resolution on the redefinition of the SI, improve the energetic metrological work system, and accelerate the quantization process of China's metrology, to make metrology, a "bedrock" with high-quality development, more solid, weighty, and valuable.
