Director’s Greeting

The human society is experiencing a world-wide scientific & technological revolution. In a historical perspective, market economy has brought science & technology up to an unprecedented degree of importance, but its sustainable development depends greatly on whether a country has a sound mechanism to keep innovation. Facts have proved that, science & technology has grown to be a decisive power for the development of economy and society, and innovation capabilities stand at the very core of a country’s overall competitiveness.

Metrology has become a country’s very important technical infrastructure and provides fundamental guarantee for all countries in the world to improve their technical innovation capability, promote economic growth and social progress, maintain national security, increase competitiveness in international trade, enhance international exchange and cooperation, facilitate the application of high-tech in industry and uplift their national strength in an all-round way.

National Institute of Metrology (NMI), founded in 1955 as China’s national metrological institute (NMI) and technical center for legal metrology, represents the country’s top competence in the research and application of measurement science and technology. Over the past more than 50 years, with the full devotion of a few generations of staff, NIM has made numerous remarkable achievements. The established national measurement standards and technologies have played a vitally important role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of quantity values throughout the nation and their international consistency. They have made great contributions to the country’s economy and its social progress.

Under the leadership of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and with the strong support of related ministries, NIM has made another great leap forward by carrying out a institutional reform, with the former National Research Center for Certified Reference Materials (NRCCRM) merged into NIM. Through this reform, NIM also broadened its research realm, formed a more scientifically organized structure that will enable higher efficiency, improved its managerial and operational mechanisms, promoted a batch of young elites, and fostered an innovation-oriented organizational culture and working environment.

Today, bearing the spirit of innovation, we see our mission in realizing the accurate and traceable measurements to support economic and social development and shape the future of life. We will continue to promote our world-wide exchange and cooperation, and work to our full capacity for the objective of establishing a state-of-the-art national metrological institute.
