Director's Greeting

Biomedical engineering is a comprehensive discipline, which has a very close relationship with medical engineering and biotechnology. The research objects involve the human body, organ, tissue, cell, to the scale of molecule. Medical engineering places emphasis on macro field of medicine science or practice, which is closely related with our human health; biology focuses on micro field, which can provide a theoretical basis for medical engineering. As an interdisciplinary subject, biomedical engineering involves multiple disciplines of biology, physics, materials, mechanics, computer science and electronics. Since the subject is of so much importance and complexity, our young research team will face up to many challenges.

However, challenges don’t come alone. Considering the growing needs for both medical and biological measurements in a nation, resource and fund we believe there are and will be plenty rooms for our young researchers to fully display their talents. In the field of medical measurements, the involved subjects include conventional biomedical equipments, varied medical imaging techniques, physiological parameter diagnose and life support equipments, medical information and digital medical system, biomedical materials and artificial organs. In biological measurements, we currently focus on metrological works of nucleic acids, proteins, microorganisms, cells, bio-active ingredients, carbohydrates and lipids, in order to establish a traceability chain of national biological measurements and to support development of biotechnology industry.

The project of “Research on Metrological Standards and Traceability Systems of Medical Diagnostic Equipments” (2011BAI02B00) was the first “12th Five-Year Plan” National Science and Technology support program in our institute. The project was led by our division. Divided into 8 sub-projects, it had a total funding of 58.58 million Yuan. 32 research units and over 200 research staff participated in this project. Among all of the 8 sub-projects, 2 of them were of our responsibility. They were: “Research on metrological standards and traceability system of medical optics and radiation imaging equipments”, and “Research on metrological standards and traceability system of visual and hearing diagnostic equipments”. The project started from April 1st, 2011 finished on November 2nd, 2015.

Ophthalmic optics is an important research area in our division. We have carried out fundamental research on glasses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses, ophthalmic instruments and other eye protection products. We have established national primary standard for vertex power, working standards for refractometers and back vertex power of contact lens, standards for center transmittance of spectacle lens, pupil distance meters and ophthalmometers. The established standards have been widely used by provincial metrological institutes or of lower level. Furthermore, some of the standards have been adopted and used by developed countries such as the United States, France, Japan and South Korea. The international standard ISO 9342-2:2005 “Test lenses for focimeters used for measuring contact lenses” drafted by our division was issued and implemented in 2005.

To cope with the challenge of WIT120 and precision medicine, National Key R&D Program of China” Research on Key Measurement Technologies for Medicine and Health care” (2016YFF0201000) is now carrying out.

In the field of biological measurements, we have held seven “10th Five-Year Plan” and “11th Five-Year Plan” National Science and Technology support programs, two “11th Five-Year Plan” national significant projects, a series of AQSIQ projects and 2 NSFC projects since 2006. Till now, we have been responsible for 10 national science and technology supporting projects with national key special subjects and  more than 10 AQSIQ and NIM projects to enable the unit of protein, nucleic acid and lipid to be traced to the International System (SI) unit and eventually realize a completed unit traceability system. We have developed 5 authoritative metrological methods for bio-molecular measurements and several authoritative metrological methods of measuring nucleic acid, protein, bioactive components, sugar and lipid in the areas of bio safety, food safety, clinic analysis, nutrition and medicine. Moreover, we have developed 15 national standard methods (9 of them have been issued) and more than 100 CRMs. (level 1: 27, level 2: 28, GMO CRMs: 24, bacterial CRMs: 7, SFA and MUFA CRMs:7, more than 20 bioactive component and matrix CRMs: more than 20).

Our main target for the next 5 years is to research on metrological and trace-to-source abilities for medical applications and equipments which are widely needed, which might cause hazard or harm to health or environment, which are mostly concerned about by people and which are urgently needed by industry. Above all, finding cure to major diseases, communicable diseases and solutions to medical safety and bio-safaty problems in metrology field is our first priority.
