Development of Synthetic Natural Gas Reference Materials

 

Summary

The project aims to research and develop high precision synthetic natural gas reference materials. The synthetic natural gas reference materials consist of more than ten components, from C1 through C8, whose relative expanded uncertainty relatied to certified value was expected to be below 1%. The materials will be developed to meet the requirements of high accuracy natural gas analysis.

 

Description

Natural gas is one of the most important new energies around the world. It is a critical issue for both natural gas provider and user to measure the amount of natural gas accurately. In the past few decades, natural gas was measured based on its flow rate and volume. However, compositions of natural gases from different sources are much different, and thereby the calorific values are also different. Nowadays, a new metrology scheme based on its calorific value has been put forward. For both metrology scheme based on volume or calorie, composition of natural gas are needed. More precise the data of composition is, more accurate the metrological result will be. Most of national metrological institutes are developing high precision synthetic natural gas RMs used to calibrate natural gas analyzers. As national metrological institute, NIM expected to develop high precision synthetic natural gas RMs in order to improve the nation’s measurement traceability in natural gas measurement. The high precision natural gas RMs that are expected to be develoed, will have an expanded uncertainty of better than 1%.
