Acoustic Emission Sensor Calibration

 

A reciprocity and optical calibration system of acoustic emission sensor were developed, as well as the Face to Face method. The project tries to study the result difference of different methods, and got their consistency.

 

Acoustic emission sensor calibration is the precondition of AE quantitative evaluation. There are two main methods of AE sensor calibration. One is the step function method, the other is reciprocity method. Though both methods are widely used and recommended in ASTM, ISO and other standards, few researches have been done to compare the result of the two methods. The systems of reciprocity and optical method are established respectively in our laboratory, and the calibration results are compared. The results shows that the reciprocity system and the optical system built in NIM could get the sensitivity and the frequency response of AE sensors, and the results of the two methods are almost the same. For optical method, an exciting sensor with high sensitivity and flat frequency response, as well as the laser vibro-meter with small level error are expected to get more accurate result.
