Very High Frequency Hydrophone Calibration by Optical Methods

 

The aim of this study is to realize the high frequency sound pressure in water by optical methods, including Michelson interferometer and laser Doppler techniques.

 

For the hydrophone calibration by optical methods, Michelson interferometer is widely accepted and the upper frequency limit is about 70MHz. But the acousto-optic interaction and frequency response of the receiving photodiodes contribute to the major part of the measurement uncertainty. Laser Doppler method, as an alternative optical method, when properly arranged, didn’t suffer the above-mentioned effects.

 

This study is to construct the Michelson interferometer and the laser Doppler system, by comparing the results of the two methods, evaluate the effect of the acousto-optic interaction and the receiving photodiodes.

 

Based on the laser Doppler system, calibration of the high-intensity hydrophone (e.g. optical-fiber hydrophone) applied in the high-intensity field will be studied.
