Another Two National Top Science Awards Won in 2011

Recently, NIM was honored by the State Council of China the second prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award for its two programs completed in 2011, namely, the Development of Standard Reference Materials for Toxic Chemistry Elements and the New Method of Length Measurement and Solid Density Primary Standard.

With the first program, 138 certified reference materials (CRMs) as well as the preparation technology respectively for pesticide, veterinary medicine, food additives, organic pollutants, toxic chemistry elements, acid rain, soil and blood serum matrix materials have been developed. The achievements of the program are recognized internationally by the comparisons organized by the CCQM. Through their application, the validity, reliability and accuracy of the measurement results in areas of food safety, land resource investigation, environment protection and public health are ensured.

The second program was carried out by NIM in cooperation with Tsinghua University. The group established a national solid density primary standard by making an interferometric measurement of the diameter of a silicon sphere with a mechanical scanning method, which is different from the laser frequency tuning method widely used in other countries.
