Introduction OF the Changping Campus of the National Institute of Metrology On Aug 27, 2009, four years after the foundation stone was laid on July 27, 2005, the Changping Campus of the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) is officially put into use. This Campus, being a modern experimental site of metrology tailored for the research on and development of new-generation quantum standards and advanced measurement technology, is a new milestone in NIM’s development, and as well, one of China’s research infrastructure projects of epoch-marking significance. The campus lies in Beijing’s Ming Tombs nature reserve. Because the whole reserve is cordoned off against any industry, the Campus is fortunate to have an ideal environmental stability, with very little interference of vibration, alternative magnetic field, radio-frequency, electromagnetic wave, or noises, etc., which just fits the needs of precise experiments. The Campus covers, approximately, a total area of 560,000 m2, including about 47,000 m2 occupied by all construction modules. In most of these modules are labs of environmental controls, like vibration isolation, air cleanliness, electromagnetic shielding, electrical power quality, and temperature and humidity control, and a number of facilities for specific purposes, like EMC anechoic chambers, acoustic anechoic chambers, the electron accelerator, and the cryogenic equipment. Research priorities at this campus will be quantum standards, advanced measurement technologies in multiple areas, and exploration into new areas like food safety, biology, energy, advanced materials, environment, and health care and so on. To look ahead, by using the new campus both as an advanced facility to enable quality research, and an open platform that welcomes global collaboration, NIM hopes to attract elite scientists, enhance innovating capabilities, serve national strategies, and achieve accomplishments at a new height. It is our objective, with all-above mentioned efforts, to build the Changping Campus into a sharable resource with triple supporting pillars: facilities, scientists, and research programs, so as to support the sustainable development of China metrology and NIM’s efforts in fulfilling of its mission. see also: NIM Home Page |
